There has, over the past several months, been skepticism as to the arrival of the iPhone 3G in the UK. Despite the verification of price cuts, many customers are still concerned that they are going to actually be paying more for the new iPhone than they would have paid previously. The bill for owning the new 3G iPhone will come to £729 over 18 months. When compared to the £899 that many spent for the first edition iPhone in the same time period, it is a significant price cut.

Although the specifics were not given, wireless carrier O2 has announced that they will offer a “pay as you go” contract option later this year. Per an article in Macworld UK, the lack of this type of contract so far has been cited as one of the reasons that many more UK mobile phone users have not yet purchased an iPhone. Though the option seems to be welcome news for many users, the current priority seems to be dealing with subscription customers first. An official statement from retailer Carphone Warehouse announced that the iPhone 3G “pay as you go” contract will be in place sometime before Christmas.
